There are times when you unlock your smartphone and get notified about a bunch of missed WhatsApp calls that did not ring while the device was locked. This is an issue faced by both Apple iOS and Android device users. Here we will focus on how to fix this problem on Android phones.
Basic Troubleshoot
There are certain things you have to confirm about your device that are needed to begin the fixing process. Let’s start with the basic one. Enable your device’s cellular data/Wi-Fi to ensure an active internet plan. Then, check if the sound profile of the device is set to silent and ensure that your device’s ringtone is configured properly. In the end, reboot your device and then check if you are receiving WhatsApp call notifications while your device is locked. If the problem still persists, go ahead with the troubleshooting methods mentioned below.
Check if ‘Do Not Disturb’ is enabled
The ‘Do Not Disturb’ feature can mute all incoming cellular calls including the calls from other third-party apps if enabled. If the Whatsapp calls are not ringing while the device is locked confirm that your ‘Do Not Disturb’ feature isn’t active. The ‘Do Not Disturb’ option can be found in the Sound segment of the Android Settings menu. This option is usually available on the System Tray that can be easily disabled if it’s not there then follow these steps:
- Go to Settings
- Click on Sound
- Choose the ‘Do not disturb’ option and tap on the ‘Turn Off Now’’ button
Force Stop the app
If WhatsApp calls are not ringing when your device is locked, another way to fix this issue is by force-stopping the app. Here are the steps to force stop the app:
- Long-press the WhatsApp icon on the display
- Tap the App info option to open the WhatsApp info page.
- Tap the Force stop icon
- Select OK to confirm
Re-enable app notification
If WhatsApp notification on your device is disabled or not properly configured, voice and video calls may not ring, even when the device is unlocked. To resolve this, check the app’s notification settings and confirm that WhatsApp is set to receive notifications. If things look good, you can turn off WhatsApp notifications for once and re-enable it. This may help restore WhatsApp’s text and call notifications back to normal. Follow these steps to re-enable Whatsapp notification:
- Long-press the WhatsApp icon
- Tap on the App info option to reveal the details page.
- Select the Notifications options
- Turn off the Show notifications option and turn it back on.
Clear the App Cache
Apps make cache files boot quicker and run faster while using. Although, when these files pile up with time, they take up the internal storage and might even be the reason for an app to malfunction. If none of the above steps solves the issue, clearing the cache storage might help you fix the problem. Here are the steps to clear the app cache:
- Go to Settings
- Select ‘App and notifications’
- Tap on App info
- Scroll through the apps and select Whatsapp
- Select ‘Storage and Cache’
- Then select the Clear Cache option
Updating the app
There are times when a bug causes the app to malfunction which results in your device failing to notify you of WhatsApp voice and video calls. Then the best way to fix the issue is by manually updating WhatsApp to its latest available version. Follow these steps to upgrade the app:
- Go to the Google Play Store
- Visit the WhatsApp info page to check if it’s up-to-date.
- Tap the Update button (if available) to install the latest version of the app
Change background data settings
WhatsApp needs 24X7 access to your device’s cellular data or Wi-Fi connection to offer users prompt notifications of texts and calls in real-time. If a WhatsApp call is not ringing when your device is locked, confirm that the app can access your device’s internet connection in the background. To confirm the same, follow these steps:
- Launch the WhatsApp app info page
- Choose ‘Mobile data & Wi-Fi.’
- Check if Background data is enabled.
- You can turn on the ‘Unrestricted data usage’ option to allow WhatsApp to have unrestricted data access (even when Data Saver is enabled on your device).
Disable the Android Battery Saver
Another reason for this problem is the Android Battery Saver feature. To extend battery life, Battery Saver (Battery Optimisation on some devices) may cause your device to block WhatsApp call notifications. Disable the Battery Saver and check if WhatsApp calls now ring when your device is locked. The battery saver option is also usually available in the notification tray, if it’s not there follow these steps to disable it:
- Go to the Settings menu
- Select the Battery option
- Tap on the Battery Saver
- Select Turn Off Now
Update Google Play Services
Google Play Services has an important role to play in the proper functioning of the apps and other services like location services, push notifications, etc. Updating Google Play services might also help resolve the
- Go to the Settings menu
- Choose ‘Apps & notifications’
- Tap on App info to reveal all the apps that are there on your device
- Scroll through the application list and select ‘Google Play services.’
- Select the Advanced drop-down button.
- Choose App details under the store section
- This will redirect you to the ‘Google Play services’ listing on the Play Store
- Tap the update button to get the latest version of the software on your device
Reinstall the app
Deleting and reinstalling Whatsapp from the device is another troubleshooting solution that is worth trying out. To do this follow the steps mentioned below:
- Go to Play Store
- Launch the WhatsApp info page
- Tap on the Uninstall button to remove the app and its data from your device.
- Reinstall the app
- Setup your account and check if the calls notify you when the device is locked
Update your device’s Android version
If all the above troubleshooting methods fail to get WhatsApp call notifications on your device then try updating your device’s operating system to the latest version. To do that follow these steps:
- Go to the Settings menu
- Select the System option
- Tap on Software Update
- Check if there is any available Android update
- Install the update on your device
If the Whatsapp call notification was working fine before installing the new update and you are facing this issue after the version update, then you may consider downgrading to the last version of the app.
