System failed to give justice or punish drug mafia: Navjot Sidhu’s latest remarks again raise eyebrows | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu on Thursday said that a system that could not give “justice to our guru” or punish the big fishes involved in the drug trade needs to be demolished.
The Congress leader also said that either this system would prevail or it would be him.
Sidhu’s comments have often put the party’s state leadership in the dock. The latest utterings again raise eyebrows as they come not from an opposition leader but from someone who heads the ruling party’s state unit.
“A system which could not give justice to our Guru and could not punish the big fishes involved in Drug trade needs to be demolished. I categorically state that I’m not running for any post and it’s either this system will stay or Navjot Singh Sidhu,” Sidhu tweeted.

Sidhu apparently was referring to the past cases of sacrilege which have hurt the sentiments of many in Punjab. His comments also come after Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia was granted bail in a drugs case by a court recently.
However, the remarks attract attention as chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi has been emphasising the efforts made by his state government in the past three months to address issues that affect the people of the state. The Congress, which is headed by Sidhu in the state, has ruled Punjab for five years.
Sidhu, however, presented himself as an agent of change and claimed that mafia and mischievous politicians had eroded the system itself.
“The fight is to change this system which has eroded Punjab like termites and is being run by Mafias in connivance of mischievous politicians. This system cries for a change & reforms as the glory of Punjab has been annihilated by the nexus of Few political leaders and Mafia,” Sidhu said in another tweet.

There has been speculation that factionalism exists in the Punjab Congress and could affect the party’s poll prospects. Infighting had earlier led to the exit of former chief minister Amarinder Singh.

Amarinder Singh’s party Punjab Lok Congress meanwhile took a swipe at both Channi and Sidhu.
“While you reject each other, people of Punjab will reject you both!” the Punjab Lok Congress tweeted.
