owaisi: Owaisi rejects Z-category security, says make me ‘A-category’ citizen | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: A day after an attack on his car at Hapur in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, the home ministry on Friday approved Z-category security for AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, which he rejected.
After reassessing his threat levels, the ministry of home affairs offered Owaisi the pan-India Z-category security by CRPF, however, the MP, while addressing the Lok Sabha later, rejected the cover, saying he would prefer to be treated like an “A-category” citizen instead.
Sources told TOI that the CRPF would nonetheless approach the MP after receiving a formal home ministry order for making the necessary arrangements. “It is possible that he may, at that point of time, convey his unwillingness to accept security,” an officer said without elaborating on what the next move of the CRPF or the ministry of home affairs would be in that case.
The AIMIM chief’s car was attacked in Hapur while returning to Delhi after attending election-related events in western Uttar Pradesh, where polling is due in a few days.
Under ‘Z’ category security, the second highest cover, CRPF commandos protect the VVIP 24X7. About 16-20 armed commandos are deployed in shifts. The security detail includes an escort and a pilot vehicle when the protectee travels by road.
Owaisi on Thursday also requested the Election Commission to ensure an independent probe into the incident.
Arrests have been made by the UP police in the case relating to the attack on Owaisi.
