On vote eve, EC directs FIRs against Arvind Kejriwal and Badal | India News – Times of India

BATHINDA/ CHANDIGARH: A case was registered on Saturday against Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi and Congress candidate and singer Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu aka Sidhu Moosewala for violation of the model code of conduct, while Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal faced similar charges ahead of Sunday’s voting in the state.
Channi and Moosewala were campaigning in Mansa after 6pm on Friday, the time limit set for all canvassing to stop, police said. The case was registered on a complaint from AAP candidate Vijay Singla. The Punjab chief electoral officer’s office has asked the Mohali district authorities to register an FIR against AAP national convenor Kejriwal based on a complaint made on February 18 by SAD vice president Arshdeep Singh Kler, who alleged that he violated the model code by making “false and frivolous allegations” against political parties.
Kler, a lawyer, objected to a video allegedly uploaded by AAP on social media platforms to malign the image of SAD and other political parties. SAD too got into trouble as the chief electoral officer’s office asked the Mohali authorities to register an FIR against party president Sukhbir Singh Badal on a complaint from AAP that he had violated the code by appealing for votes from his official Facebook page 48 hours before polling when all forms of canvassing are disallowed.
AAP legal cell’s state joint secretary Ferry Sofat has alleged that the “silent period” of 48 hours started at 6pm on Friday, but Badal circulated the video of his appeal for vote during that time.
