NEW DELHI: Chief election commissioner Sushil Chandra on Friday said that he will visit poll-bound Uttar Pradesh next week to review the situation in the state amid Allahabad high court’s suggestion that elections should be delayed due to the Omicron threat.
The poll panel chief said that an appropriate decision will be taken following his visit.
“I will be visiting UP next week. An appropriate decision as required by the situation will be taken after we review it,” CEC Chandra told reporters in reply to a question on the high court’s observation.
Elections in the politically crucial state are due in February-March next week.
The Allahabad high court had urged the government and Election Commission to consider delaying elections in UP for a month or two and impose a ban on all political rallies amid fears of a potential third wave of Covid.
On Uttarakhand situation, Chandra said he had asked Chief Secretary SS Sandhu about Omicron cases in the state and was told that there was only one case of the latest variant of Covid-19 in the state.
The CEC also spoke of various safeguards taken by the commission due to Covid but sought to assure that whatever is required will be done as per the “Constitutional position” to check the spread of the virus.
The high court said that lakhs of people contracted Covid during the second wave this year and the gram panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal assembly polls also contributed to the surge.
If this is not stopped in time, the consequences could be more dire than the second wave of the pandemic, it warned.
The HC’s remarks came amid a slight rise in Omicron cases in the country. The new variant, which emerged in South Africa last month, is highly transmissible and is likely to evade vaccine immunity.
