The health ministry has warned states and Union Territories about the indications of a fresh surge powered by Omicron, which is found to be at least three times more transmissible than the Delta variant. In a letter to states and Union Territories, the Centre has asked local authorities to bring back restrictions including night curfews, strict restrictions on large gatherings, curtail numbers in marriages and funerals, restrict numbers in offices and public transport.
Districts have been asked to activate Covid war rooms and keep a close watch on numbers and proactively analyse trends and surges.

Given high transmissibility of Omicron, the Centre has also encouraged district level or local authorities to take prompt decisions and action to contain any possible spread.
The overall Covid-19 cases in the country are also increasing. A total of 6,317 new infections were recorded on Tuesday. The active caseload stood at 78,190 cases.
