Mother’s charity ‘is in talks with auditors’, cuts back on spend | India News – Times of India

KOLKATA: People and organizations associated with Missionaries of Charity (MoC) on Tuesday expressed hope that the situation arising from the Centre refusing to renew its licence to accept foreign donations would be resolved soon, so that orphans and the destitute are not left staring at uncertainty.
MoC has already started reducing expenditure at both Mother House, its headquarter here, and various homes. Sources said MoC was in talks with auditors to resolve the funds situation that had become tight after the Union home ministry refused to renew its Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) licence on December 25 for not meeting eligibility conditions. The home ministry statement indicated there are issues related to the audit report. MoC may appeal to the ministry for review of its decision.
Though MoC spokesperson Sunita Kumar said work was on as usual and that superior general Sister Prema seemed confident that the issue would be resolved soon, officials at some of the homes TOI visited admitted there were signs of worry.
Alima Bibi, a resident of Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, who visits Nirmala Sishu Bhavan once a month to collect rations and medicine for her two physically challenged daughters, was told that it is uncertain when the delivery will happen next month.
Owing to Christmas, the month-long programme of distributing medicines to about 1,200 destitute from Nirmala Sishu Bhavan was completed early in December. The home also serves cooked food to about 200 street dwellers in Howrah and Sealdah. These services have become irregular now.
Nirmala Sishu Bhavan itself has 52 spastic children who need constant care, medication and food. Md Salim, a local fruit seller at Ripon Street, who supplies 350 bananas per day to Mother House, has been told to stop delivery till further order.
