It’s a tragic day for the country as the singing legend, Lata Mangeshkar breathed her last on February 6, 2022 at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. She was 92. Ms Mangeshkar was taken to the intensive care unit on January 8 after being tested positive for COVID-19. Her condition deteriorated over the weekend and was reportedly put on ventilator support. She was being treated for both pneumonia and COVID-19. The government announced a two-day national mourning in memory of the iconic singer. As a mark of respect, the national flag will fly at half-mast for two days. Known famously as the ‘Nightingale of India’ and ‘Melody Queen of India,’ the singer’s demise left the nation in shock. She has left behind a treasure trove of songs vocalised in her euphonious voice, sung across a career that lasted for over 70 years. Lata Mangeshkar began her career in music and acting, simultaneously, at the age of 13— juggling singing with acting parts in Marathi films. She recorded her first playback song for a Marathi film, ‘Kiti Hasaal.’ Unfortunately, the song was removed from the film’s final cut. Ms Mangeshkar worked in over eight films from 1942-1948.

With little success in acting, Lata ji went on to make a career in singing. She was initially rejected as a playback singer. However, she went on to deliver some of the biggest hits of the industry. Her first Hindi song was ‘Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu’ for the 1943 Marathi feature, ‘Gajaabhaau.’ From then on, there was no turning back. She went on to collaborate with Bollywood titans like Shankar Jaikishan, Naushad Ali and SD Burman among others.

In 1945, Lata ji had an early hit in the song ‘Aayega Aanewala,’ from the film ‘Mahal.’ Eventually, her voice and career reached the greatest of heights.

Ms Mangeshkar sang raga-based compositions by Naushad in movies like ‘Baiju Bawra,’ ‘Mother India’ and ‘Mughal-E-Azam.’ Before 1957, legendary composer S.D. Burman chose Lata Mangeshkar as the leading female singer for his musical scores in ‘House No.44,’ ‘Devdas,’ and ‘Sazaa.’
