Jakhar quits poll politics, denies leaving Congress | India News – Times of India

BATHINDA: Former Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar said on Sunday he has quit electoral politics, but scotched speculation that he had quit the party because he was reportedly upset over being “sidelined”.
“I am very much a part of Congress… has given me so much and I am happy to be a soldier of the party, which my family has been associated with since long. I will not contest any election in the future, be it for assembly or Parliament,” Jakhar said after party MP Rahul Gandhi declared chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi as the party’s CM candidate for the Punjab elections.
The 68-year-old Jakhar didn’t reveal his plans, saying: “What life has in store for you in the future cannot be predicted. ”
He recently said that 42 Congress MLAs had voted for him to be Captain Amarinder Singh’s successor as the chief minister, but he lost out because of his religion. Speculation swirled thereafter that he may retire from active politics.
