K Vijay Kumar, IPS is a retired IPS officer. He was born on 15 September 1952. IPS Vijay was the chief of the Tamil Nadu Special Task Force that was involved in Operation Cocoon of 2004. The operation behind the death of the Veerappan. He served as the Advisor to the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. He had also been appointed the senior advisor to Home Ministry for the Left Wing Extremism areas. In December 2019 he has rejoined as senior security adviser in Ministry of Home Affairs.
He has served as Inspector General of Police at Commando Battalions for Resolute Action, (CoBRA), a specialized force which has been established and raised for jungle combats. Kashmir Police Chief is not Kumar’s first posting as chief in the insurrection-hit area as CoBRA are selected amongst CRPF personnel and are deployed in all areas affected by insurrection of the states of Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Meghalaya & Assam.
Kumar was appointed as IGP Kashmir on 10 May 2017.
