IPL auction 2022: Wanindu Hasaranga – 2 IPL games, Rs 10.75 crore price tag | Cricket News – Times of India

When Wanindu Hasaranga took a hat-trick in his debut outing for Sri Lanka in an ODI against Zimbabwe back in 2017, he wrote the first chapter of a career that has blossomed since then. On Saturday, at the 2022 IPL Auction in Bengaluru, perhaps the second chapter of his career began.
Before Saturday, Hasaranga, a player in the mold of Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan as a spinning all-rounder who delivers aggressive leg-breaks besides being a hard-hitter in the lower middle order, had played just two IPL Games.
Hasaranga saw the Royal Challengers Bangalore break the bank to take him home for a whopping Rs 10.75 Crore.

His base price was Rs 1 crore, but a bidding war between the franchises saw it stretch past the Rs 10 crore mark.
His previous, and the only two matches so far, in the IPL were also for RCB.
In stark contrast to his performance on his limited-overs international debut, Hasaranga scored a brisk 87 on his first-class debut. But in the domestic limited-overs circuit, his leg-breaks made more news than his batting.

In his fledgling international career so far, Hasaranga has played 4 Tests, 29 ODIs and 34 T20Is. He has 29 ODI wickets and 55 in T20Is to date, having scored 546 and 332 runs for Sri Lanka in the two white-ball formats respectively.
While the bidding for Hasaranga was being hotly contested, a health scare saw auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapsing on the stage. He was later reported to be stable, having suffered a bout of postural hypotension (low blood pressure).
However, Edmeades didn’t return to resume the auction and the bidding for Hasaranga, which was taken over by noted commentator Charu Sharma. And RCB sealed the deal.
