NEW DELHI: Maharashtra and West Bengal again on Wednesday reported the sharpest rise in coronavirus cases, with the former adding 46,723 fresh cases and the latter recording 22,155 new infections to its tally.

The tally of Omicron cases earlier today climbed to 4,868, the health ministry stated in its release.

Maharashtra added a total of 46,723 cases to its tally, showing a sharp rise in cases from Tuesday.
Meanwhile, West Bengal recorded a single-day spike of 22,155 cases, from 21,098 new infections a day before.

Among the big cities, Mumbai showed a jump of over 5,000 cases, logging 16,420 fresh cases in a day.
Delhi cases rose by 27,561, taking the positivity rate in the national capital to 26.22%.

India had reported 1,94,720 fresh coronavirus cases on Tuesday morning.

The corresponding increase in deaths till now has not been as alarming as it was during the second wave.
The country reported 442 more fatalities earlier today, pushing the total death toll to 4,84,655.
