As Omicron spreads to more states of India, the number of cases of the new variant have climbed to 3,007, the health ministry stated in its daily bulletin.
Maharashtra reported nearly a 13% rise in cases from Thursday, adding 40,925 new cases to its swelling Covid tally.
The state of West Bengal came a close second, showing a jump of over 18,213 cases in just 24 hours.
Among the big cities, the sharpest rise in cases was seen in Mumbai at 20, 971, followed by Delhi, which posted a total of 17,335 new cases on Friday, taking the positivity rate in the national capital to 17.73 per cent.
The city had crossed the 5000-mark on Tuesday.
India had reported 1,17,100 fresh coronavirus cases earlier today, taking the country’s total cases to 3,52,26,386.
While the cases are rising fast, however as of now, the increase in deaths has not been as alarming as it was during the second wave.
The country reported 302 more fatalities on Friday, pushing the total death toll to 4, 83, 178.
