Meta-owned photo and video sharing platform is among one of the most social media platforms today. Instagram offers a host of features like the ability to share photos and videos, Reels and also the option to send individual messages to other Instagram users.
What if you want to send a DM to someone at some odd hours, but don’t want to disturb them. Or, sometimes a message is supposed to be sent but it isn’t that important to call for attention.
Well, for situations like that there’s a feature in Instagram that allows users to send a Direct Message (DM) to someone without the notification sound.
What is the difference between Silent messages and the Mute feature
Well, both of them have two different features. The ‘Mute’ feature is for the receiver’s end, while the Silent message is for the sender.
Simply put, one usually mutes a group chat or an individual chat, when they don’t want to be bothered by messages they are receiving from someone or from the group chat.
The other feature allows senders to mute the message which means the message will be delivered to the receiver but it won’t play any notification sound when received.
Sounds interesting, right? If you want to try out this feature, here are the steps you need to follow:
Open the Instagram app on your smartphone
Tap on the ‘DM’ button at the top right corner
Now, choose the contact to whom you want to send a silent message
Then, type ‘@silent’ before your message
For example: ‘@silent’ <space> <message>
Tap the ‘Send’ button
This message will be sent without the notification sound. This means that the receiver will receive the message but without any notification.
