Haridwar hate speech case: Religious leader Yati Narsinghanand arrested | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Religious leader Yati Narsinghanand, accused of inflammatory speeches at the recent ‘Dharma Sansad’ in Haridwar, has been arrested.
This is the second arrest in the case, after Waseem Rizvi, who was arrested last Thursday.
Yati Narsinghanand, the controversial priest of Dasna temple in Ghaziabad, was among the organisers of the event at Haridwar. He has often been in the news for provocative statements against certain communities.
Rizvi, who converted to Hinduism and now calls himself Jitendra Tyagi, was the first arrest in the case. A former chairman of the UP Central Shioa Waqf Board, Rizvi was booked for promoting enmity on grounds of religion.
Yati Narsinghanand’s name was later added to the police FIR, along with Sagar Sindhu Maharaj.
The Uttarakhand government had earlier formed a 5-member SIT to probe the allegations of hate speech delivered at the ‘Dharma Sansad’ congregation in Haridwar between December 17-19.
Several religious figures, including many from ‘akharas’ attended the event and allegedly delivered speeches, targeting miniroty communities.
The Uttarakhand government has been under tremendous pressure to take action against those who had delivered the speeches at the event.
Even the Supreme Court had pulled up the state government on Wednesday for not acting against the accused even after so many days.
