NEW DELHI: Citing “urgency”, the Centre on Monday urged the Supreme Court to schedule the hearing of EWS (economically weaker sections) quota matter related to NEET-PG admissions on Tuesday.
An SC bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud said the EWS quota issue is a three-judge matter and that he would request Chief Justice of India N V Ramana for listing of the case on Tuesday or day after, according to an ANI tweet.
The apex court is hearing a batch of petitions challenging the government and a medical counselling committee (MCC) notice issued in July last year, providing 10% quota for the EWS category and reservation for OBC (Other Backward Classes) in the All India Quota in medical admission through NEET. It has raised questions on the EWS income limit criteria and in the process, the counselling for NEET-PG has been stalled, leading to protests by the concerned doctors.
As per the legislation ratified by Parliament in January 2019, a general category student or candidate whose family income is less than Rs 8 lakh per year is eligible for EWS reservation.
