He was a part of the 2007 T20 World Cup winning team and after which he has included again in the Indian side for across formats when India toured New Zealand in 2008. Yet again he failed with the bat and missed out on his chance to cement a place in the team. For a very long period, he was not even in the waiting list. Later a good 2012-13 first-class season helped him back in the team for the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 held in England. After scoring back to back hundreds in the practice games, he couldn’t do much when it mattered and was once again dropped from the team. After a prolific 2016-17 domestic season, he has again been included in the Indian squad for 2017 ICC Champions Trophy after Manish Pandey was ruled out due to an injury.

Dinesh Karthik was a member of the victorious Indian team at the Under-19 World Cup held in South Africa in 2003, where he was the third-highest scorer for India. Karthik is noted for his hard-hitting ability and has won three man-of-the-match awards in his first 14 ODI matches.

Kartik has also played for English county side Somerset as an overseas player, playing three matches in 2005 and four in 2007. He was the first Indian to play county cricket since Sachin Tendulkar’s stint with Yorkshire in 1994.

Dinesh Karthik made his debut against Bangladesh in 2004. He has played 24 Test matches, after he replaced Sourav Ganguly in his debut match against Bangladesh, but had not been able to secure a permanent position because of the presence of players like Dravid, Tendulkar and Laxman at the top of the order. He was dropped for the 2006 series against England, after a fairly lacklustre performance.

Karthik had a memorable debut in the third ODI against Pakistan at Delhi in 2005. He made an unbeaten 70 and provided an impetus to the Indian innings with his aggressive batting and opening partnership with VVS Laxman. He followed this good display up with another fifty at Mumbai in the next game, where he shared a 186-run partnership with Rahul Dravid.

Batting at number five, Karthik only made 32 runs in 4 overs. He was dropped for the next game and did not play again until the second T20I in Nairobi where he made 12 runs off 6 balls. He was again dropped for the T20I series against Sri Lanka and did not get another chance to prove himself at that level.

Karthik played in the 2007 season of the Indian Premier League for the Royal Challengers Bangalore and was appointed their vice-captain ahead of the 2008 IPL season.
