by NEW DELHI: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are among the VVIP politicians who will soon have women CRPF commandos in their Z-plus security contingent.
Not just the women leaders, but senior Delhi-based politicians like home minister Amit Shah, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Manmohan Singh as well as the latter’s wife Gursharan Kaur are among the Z-plus protectees, who are provided with an advanced security liaison protocol due to their high-risk profile, will have the women CRPF commandos in the contingent of their security personnel, likely from January, said sources.
Sources added the women personnel, who have undergone a mandatory course covering all aspects of VIP security, may also accompany the VVIPs on their campaign visits to the states where assembly polls are due in the near future.
The CRPF has raised its first-ever contingent of 32 women commandos in its VIP security wing and they have just wound up their 10-week training in unarmed combat, body frisking and special-weapons firing. Sources said they are likely to be deployed starting January, with Z-plus category protectees of CRPF whose primary residence is in the national Capital.
About a dozen other ‘Z-plus’ CRPF protectees will also be extended the security by the women commandos on a rotational basis, sources said.
The women commandos will start with house-protection team of these VIPs and may be asked to accompany them, if required, on their visits to five states going to polls — Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa — in the coming months.
The women commandos, as part of their duties for house protection, will frisk female visitors and join the overall security detail of the VVIPs during tours. They will also provide proximate security to the protectee, especially in case of Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, sources said.
The women commandos, like their male counterparts, will carry arms, ballistic protection and other gadgets as required on the job.
