Channi or Sidhu? Congress begins talks on CM face in Punjab | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Amid uncertainty over Congress‘s chief minister face in Punjab, party chief Sonia Gandhi on Sunday held deliberations with senior leaders and workers to zero in on a candidate for the February 20 elections.
The Congress is yet to formally declare its candidate for the top job in Punjab amid talks that both chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and state party chief Navjot Singh Sidhu are eyeing the post.
Sonia Gandhi is seeking responses from Congress leaders and workers through the party’s Shakti app, sources told PTI.
The people have been asked to submit their opinion in a day or two.
The Congress has been putting its weight behind incumbent Channi, who belongs to the numerically dominant Dalit community in Punjab.
The grand old party’s decision to field Channi from two seats was seen as a “stamp of approval” by some observers.
SCs and STs have been a traditional vote bank of the Congress. However, the communities drifted away from the party following the emergence of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and some other small groups in the state.
The Congress is now seeking to consolidate the SC vote bank, which comprises almost one-third of Punjab’s population, by choosing Channi to replace former chief minister Amarinder Singh.
A three-time MLA from Chamkaur Sahib, Channi is the first Dalit chief minister of Punjab.
He will contest the polls from Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur.
He is the only party candidate to be fielded from two seats.
So far, the Congress has followed the ‘one family, one seat’ formula in allocating tickets to its candidates in Punjab.
